While selvedge still essentially rules the conversation with regard to men's jeans, the denim debate for women often boils down to rise. From low-riders that create curves but pose muffin top risk, to seemingly-safer high-waisted silhouettes verging dangerously in close proximity to mom jeans, a excellent mid-rise looks current together with flatters most body forms. Entering the denim game this coming year is Neuw, an Australian label whose "Vintage Revision" take on denim, based on Swedish co-founder Par Lundqvist's two, 500-piece archive, updates the brands of decades past with cuts for today.
The softness with the denim in the Marilyn Skinny from Neuw's Black Colors range, which I've been wearing for the past month, speaks to the brand's vintage influences, feeling similar to a worn-in standby set than stiff new jeans. While the denim's pedigree is extremely important, the right fit stays the foremost concern.
To look at first pulled them as many as my navel, I expected that dreaded elongated backside, but was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. Neuw's womenswear designer Phoebe Taylor explains the form details were styled so that "your butt looks the perkiest it ever offers. The high-retention denim used to complete this fit holds the wearer in, and for that reason, it's going to end up très sexy. "
The advanced method to fit disguises itself within the line's decidedly retro-influenced artistic. Initially created as some sort of "sharp alternative" to indigo, the Black Colour line expands beyond dark tones with a range of neutrals and bolder shades like red and red. While candy colors continue being a staple denim look these days, Neuw's approach incorporates a black weave to the inner layer, instead in the usual whiteâa method not typically used since '50sâto create the perfect patina over time. Another distinguishing detail: Neuw brings premium Japanese people and Turkish denim in to a more accessible price range, hovering around $150.
Taylor tells us they work to enhance upon the timeless style by culling the most effective details from their comprehensive vintage stock. "We reminisce about the years of the depression in the 1930s, and ogle the beautiful care that's taken in repairing garments and getting the most out of what was available, " Taylor teaches. "We have taken this appreciation aboard when creating new styles from this climate. It's the days of the DIY culture. "
Neuw, in working together with the challenges of designing for different body forms, while also competing in the over-saturated denim market, earns the rare distinction of bringing a brand new perspective to women's jeans. The collection sells with their Melbourne flagship, Stockholm Issue, and in stores world wide.
